A simple method useful for measuring and comparing the viscosity of fluids. This method does not provide data easily converted to standard units, but as long as identical syringes are used, it provides a reliable way of comparing the viscosity of different fluids. For example, it can be used to compare the viscosity of two different bubble juices.

Syringe Test Example - Water

It is very important to keep the syringes clear and to perform calibration runs with water to make sure that the syringe is not becoming blocked.

This method is intended for gross measurement it cannot be relied on to distinguish between liquids whose viscosities are very close to each other.

Since different manufacturers and different syringe models may have different apertures or other dimensions, you really need to use identical models from the same manufacturer. Two different model 20 ml. syringes can yield very different results.

Times taken from videos of test. Syringe filled to the 20 ml. level. Video recording is started. The plug is removed. Frame times are recorded for the moment when liquid first emerges from the nozzle when the fluid reaches the 15 ml, 10ml and 0ml marks.

Comparisons can only be made between sessions done at the same temperature since viscosity can be heavily influenced by temperature.

Example Results:

Water: 9.5 seconds

Jumbo Juice: 11.5-12 seconds
